It’s almost recital season at The Conservatory.
With about a month and half left to polish my pieces, I’ve been thinking a lot about taking ownership of the repertoire and letting go of old vocal habits. It is so easy to get focused on the end result (ie: in my case, a successful recital) and forget the process you need to go through in order to achieve your desired goal.
And then, this video surfaced on Facebook! Here are some words on process from mezzo Joyce DiDonato:
“Don’t redo what you just did cause it worked. We go through the process – guys, this is really important – really, really important. Don’t recreate what just worked. Analyze the process you went through to create that result. You go for the result, it ain’t gonna work. It might, but it’s luck – it’s not technique. Process.”
